Toronto Fashion Week Roundup

With so many international designers around, it’s easy to overlook Canadian talent… until Fashion Week comes along. Fashion Week in Toronto is the most wonderful time of year. The tents are bustling with like-minded individuals, there is enough street style inspo to last until next season, and the shows make me proud to be from a country that boasts so much creativity. This season, I was honoured to attend six different shows and wanted to share my experience with my readers.

My one regret is not getting any pictures of the David Dixon show on account of my phone being out of battery and my camera running out of memory (bad blogger). Although I don’t have any pictures to show you from the show, I can tell you that it really lived up to the expectations that you would have for a 20th anniversary collection. Edgy, but feminine with a slurry of leather and chiffon, the collection received much deserved standing ovation upon its finale.

Sid Neigum

Sid Neigum won the Mercedes-Benz Startup Award last season so I was extremely excited to attend his show. His collection contrasted sleek, futuristic pieces with structured silhouettes that looked like wearable origami.

Narces

I saw Narces for the first time last season and instantly fell in love with the feminine silhouettes. This season, designer Nikki Wirthensohn included her usual selection of classic evening wear along with edgier pieces like dresses with hot lips printed all over them! My favourite piece was the white laser cut mini dress in which I could envision myself frolicking carefree down the streets of Venice with a floppy hat. You know you love a dress when it not only gives you a burning desire to purchase it, but gets you thisclose to splurging on an Italian getaway too.

Melissa Nepton

This was my third time attending a Melissa Nepton show, and as always, I was blown away. The collection had a sporty chic vibe to it, and contrasted soft pastels with masculine silhouettes. The woollen dresses and vintage track suits looked so cozy they almost deceived me into wanting winter back.

Farley Chatto

Of all the shows I saw, Farley Chatto took the prize. The collection was inspired by the Russian Tzar and couldn’t have been more luxe. Tackling one of the models to steal the coat she was wearing did cross my mind… until I realized I’m a really slow runner and could never get away with it. Also, I will gladly take any excuse to gawk at shirtless men draped in fur… just sayin’.

Stephan Caras

Stephan Caras was the last show I attended, and as always, the collection was bold and sexy. However, the star of the show was co-designer Kyriako Caras’s (extremely well-behaved) daughter who wore the tiniest little dress made from the same fabric as the rest of the collection. My heart melted and I almost wanted kids of my own… almost.
