Lucky Red

I was recently introduced to the wonder that is known as a bao, and felt like belting out a verse of “A Whole New World”. Seriously guys, where has this stuff been all my life? It started out with Banh Mi Boys last weekend, and before I knew it, I found myself at Lucky Red less than a week later. So Lucky Red is essentially a more upscale version of the street food favourite Banh Mi Boys. I wandered into China Town with a mission to eat the filthiest, most calorie heavy meal I could find, and I can gladly say that my mission was more than accomplished.

We started off with the Duck Gravy Poutine. French fries drenched in duck gravy, kimchi, cheese curds, and topped off with crispy duck skin. Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard.

Next up, the Ham Bao Ger, which is Lucky Red’s take on a Big Mac, except better because the meat doesn’t look like it was made out of play dough.

So back story, the night before, I’d gone to a restaurant and quite possibly had the worst burger of my life. I won’t name any names because they were so apologetic (even though they couldn’t get my burger right for the second time), but it was bad. Dry, flavourless, and bad enough to permanently ruin burgers for me.

Fortunately, Lucky Red changed everything and proved just how wonderful a burger can be with its perfectly cooked and seasoned patty. Bravo.

Fried Chicken Bao, which was another hit.

But we didn’t stop there. We also ordered the Fried Chicken.

Skin that was crisp enough to put a Pringle to shame, with a flavour that sunk in to the very bone. Paired with their home made hot sauce, I was as happy as can be.

We ended with the S’mores Bao, because who says no to a dessert that involves marshmallows and Nutella? Not me. So as much as I loved the Nutella and Marshmallows, I thought the bao was too deep fried for my liking. I had to eat it like an open faced sandwich that resulted in me getting marshmallow all over my face.
