Toronto Fashion Week Fall 2016 Recap

Toronto Fashion Week Fall 2016 Recap

If you follow me on Instagram, you’d have noticed that last week was Toronto Fashion Week. While I’m proud to say that the majority of my wardrobe comes from local brands in the form of Aritzia and Oak + Fort, Toronto Fashion Week always gives me a sense of pride. It’s a bi-annual reminder of the boundless talent we have in Canada and always inspires me to be on the hunt for new local talent. So to my readers who don’t know much about Canadian fashion, I wanted to dedicate this blog post to show you exactly what we have to offer, and maybe even inspire you to shop Canadian!

Sid Neigum

Sid Neigum is Canada’s pride and joy. He recently presented at London Fashion Week, and came back to show his work off to the local industry. It was a stunning collection that featured structured silhouettes and a monochrome colour palette.

Narces

Narces is a brand that produces the most stunning dresses that are recognizable from a mile away. This season was no different, models were a flurry of lace and tulle while the audience sat mesmerized.

UNTTLD

UNTTLD won the Mercedes-Benz Startup Award last season, so I went into the show with high hopes. What I got far exceeded any expectations I ever had. It was the first time in my life I had goosebumps from watching a fashion show live. A truly breathtaking collection.

David Dixon

David Dixon presents only once a year, and this collection was dedicated raise awareness about cervical cancer. He named the collection ‘The Gene Project’, incorporating denim into his designs to encourage women to talk to their doctors about the role of genes in cervical cancer.

Bustle

A brand that’s well recognized for its luxe take on basics, Bustle is most notably known for its entertaining shows. This season, in addition to its regular models, it had children walk the runway in its sporty chic designs. The result? Adorable.

Mackage

I have to say, the Mackage show, which was held off-site at the CBC building was the highlight of my week. The location was transformed into a high-fashion igloo, and the clothes almost made me wish for winter again. Also, leather overalls are now at the top of my wish list.

Farley Chatto

Another designer who presents his collection annually, Farley Chatto’s collection was exactly the fur-filled, Tsar-inspired dream I’d hoped for.

Hayley Elsaesser

I was thoroughly looking forward to this show because Hayley is known for her eclectic and over-the-top shows. This season, she decided to use real people instead of models, and presented exactly the kind of bright and colourful designs she is notorious for.

Picadilly

This was Picadilly’s first season presenting. The show was composed of designs from three different designers, including David Dixon. I fell in love with these two all-white looks.

IMG_9712 IMG_9706

Stephan Caras

As always Stephan Caras’s show was super sexy, featuring short hemlines and plunging necklines, juxtaposed against flowing skirts and tons of tulle.

Rudsak

Unfortunately this was the only show where I couldn’t get any pictures on account of my phone and the lighting not getting along. It was however a stunning collection filled with leather and fur – everything you’d expect from one of the top Canadian brands out there.

Canada has amazing designers! I never knew until this year that Erdem was from Canada. I can see what you mean by UNTTLD. The show looked so cool! And those fur Mackage boots – outstanding! But much more appropriate for Canadian weather, than around here 😉
