Yesterday, while having ice cream with a friend who I met on Instagram, we stumbled upon the topic of what it takes to stand out in the industry. In a field that’s becoming increasingly saturated, sure numbers are important, but at the end of the day, it comes down to work ethic and your treatment of others on a personal level. One may initially stand out to brands on account their beautiful aesthetic, and great engagement, but if that individual is rude and entitled and a pain to work with, why would brands want to work with them again? Nowadays, there are thousands of bloggers and Instagrammers to choose from, and the reality of things is that everyone is replaceable. During my time at Elle, my boss interviewed a celebrity who said that when she started her career, she didn’t necessarily fall into the beauty prototype that was the norm back then. So in order to stand out, she made sure she was extremely easy to work with, and let me tell you, her strategy certainly worked to her advantage as she is currently one of the celebrities of our time. The lesson being that one should always, always be kind. The phrase kill them with kindness exists for a reason. People can’t help but root for you if you’re a joy to work with!

    Great post! As a new blogger I worry about how I can put myself in a position for opportunities and concluded that authenticity and seriously good content should be my foremost priority. When those opportunities do come along, I’ll definitely kill ’em with kindness!

    OOOOh, this was an interesting read: you worked at Elle? Cool. And I agree with all the celebs, bloggers etc in the world, everyone is replaceable. What will keep you in the game is Kindness and hon, that is sooooo hard to find. This year especially I’ve been reminded of that, but I try not to lose hope and remain inspired by the few who are kind and fact I want to be the change I want to see. Have a gd wk ( :
