As summer approaches and the sun shines brighter every day, hungry brunchers can be spotted crowding the streets on weekends. Hangry, hungover masses, all looking to get their eggs benny-bacon-mimosa fix. Lines are inevitable. While reservations are common for dinner, brunch is a different beast altogether. Anarchy reigns in the form of a first come first serve policy.
After having waited an hour for our table at Saving Grace last week, we arrived at Starving Artist, famished (appropriately), and praying under our breaths for a free table. With luck on our side, we were seated immediately and left with menus.
To anyone who’s never heard of Starving Artist, it sounds like a rather dark and dingy place. I’m happy to report that it’s actually quite the opposite. It’s a waffle enthusiast’s playground. That’s right, everything on their menu consists of waffles.
A breakfast of various eggs began.
Waffle Benny for both Nish and I, with a side of maple baked beans.
Poached to perfection (say that really fast, 10 times over). The rich hollandaise sauce complemented the waffles, and if you’re looking for a real treat, top your waffle benny with a spoonful of maple baked beans for an added punch of flavour.
Sammy Benny for Taaseen. Waffles topped with smoked salmon, eggs, and hollandaise sauce. Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?
I was already stuffed after the decadent Waffle Benny, but one thing lead to another, and before we knew it, we’d ordered three different dessert waffles.
Peanut Butter & Banana waffles.
Caramel Pecan Waffle. Sweet, nutty, and everything you would expect.
My personal favourite, the Waffle S’mores. Rich, over the top, and absolutely sinful.
To all my waffle aficionados, I highly recommend a visit to Starving Artist. And if you’re dead on the inside and dislike waffles, go to Starving Artist anyway because they’ll convert you, and then maybe we can be friends.
Happy Brunching!
