Twice a year, Toronto’s fashion scene comes together for World Mastercard Fashion Week. A week where Canadian designers showcase their talents, and guests hit the tents to showcase their street style prowess. Needless to say, it’s my favourite time of year. Although I’ve been attending fashion week for a few seasons now, this year, I had the privilege of attending the shows not just for my blog, but as a part of my job at Elle, which meant for many of the shows, I sat front row and got the best pictures possible. Apart from it being one of the most memorable (and tiring) weeks of my life, I was also reminded of just how much talent we have locally, and wanted to share with you some of my favourites.
Mikhael Kale
Mikhael Kale’s approach to S/S 2016 was less is more. There were flower appliqués, glitter, and an overall psychedelic vibe to the collection, which was a crowd favourite, and a great way to start the week.
Lucian Matis
Breathtaking collection comprised of delicate fabrics, ornate prints, and headbands that were definitely a nod in the Dolce and Gabbana direction.
Mercedes-Benz Start Up
While Beaufille happened to be my favourite (the first 2 pictures), UNTTLD (last picture) took home the $35,000 prize for best emerging designer, presenting a monochrome collection of robes that were totally up my alley.
Bustle
Bustle made a strong case for wearing athleisure outside the gym, and also made me want to take up tennis.
Zoran Dobric
This was the first show I covered for Elle, and happened to be one of my favourites. To quote directly from my team at Elle, “a futuristic take on ladies who lunch“.
Hilary Macmillan
An ode to the 70s, the collection was a fun one.
Narces
As always, Narces presented a glamorous collection ending with bridal dresses that stole my heart.
Ashtiani
Again a personal favourite, collection was inspired by the Summer of ’91, but had a futuristic vibe to it. Not to mention, the soundtrack had me Shazaaming the whole time.
Malorie Urbanovitch
Super wearable with a Celine vibe to it. Malorie Urbanovitch also partnered with artist Bernadette Paetz to have illustrations printed on select pieces, and create a collection of 3D printed earrings.
Stephan Caras
Literally the physical manifestation of spring, the collection featured watercolour painted flowers, lace, and exaggerated slits.
Mikael D
Mikael D closed fashion week with a bang, presenting a lavish array of gowns and finishing with a bridal collection that was fit for a princess.
