As I’m sure many of you know, I love to read. It’s my way of escaping reality for a small part of the day. However, if there’s one thing I’ve realized, it’s that authors favour the depressing over the uplifting. Whether it is fiction or non-fiction, there seems to be a pattern, an unsaid agreement if you will, whereby story lines are always centred around something tragic. As much as I enjoy reading about twisted families (Elif Shefak is generally my go-to author), dark history (WWII novels are a personal favourite), and tales where the protagonist digs themselves into a hole as you helplessly read (The Goldfinch, anyone?), once in a while, I want to give it a break and read something inspirational and uplifting. Unfortunately, I find that most of these are the reality TV equivalent in the world novels – fun to read, but certainly not winning any awards. Think Confessions of a Shopaholic, that book by Betches, and Crazy Rich Asians. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved reading these novels, but why is it that an acclaimed piece of work are never centred around a positive plot line?

Long story short, I’m looking for a new inspiring read. What do you guys recommend? And have you noticed this pattern in books as well?

Unrelated: How fun are these culottes from Lavish Alice? I love the slits! You can use my code ICING20 to get 20% off your next purchase from them.

I totally agree with you! The more “uplifting” books aren’t usually chefs d’oeuvres. If you do find a book that it is let me know, I’m on the hunt too!

Love those pants! So cute 🙂 I recommend any book by Morgan Matson. She’s a young adult contemporary author, but her books always put a smile on my face. I recommend “Since you’ve been gone” the most.

Super cute! I didn’t realize those were pants. On another note, I hear the author of Crazy Rich Asians has another book out now…and they’re turning CRA into a movie with Asian actors (thankfully no whitewashing).

You’re right, it seems authors really do tend to favor the depressing! And I love it too, but sometimes you just need something on the lighter side to balance it out. Like these culottes! They’re such a great cut and so perfect for summer! They look fabulous on you Siffat!

I absolutely love this look. So fresh. And I totally agree with you about the tragic and depressing theme of so many books. I don’t get it. It seems very much to be the current trend that people are entertained by tragedy. Even so many tv shows these days are about murder and disease and accidents. Which I would personally like to avoid when I am looking for relaxation or inspiration!
Personally when I am looking for a book that is uplifting, inspiring and full of adventure I have often turned to Jules Verne. Another one of my favourite books is The Kontiki Expedition. If you find any modern day authors writing uplifting fiction for adults I’d love to know. The only ones I can find seem to be for kids.
