One of the questions I get asked most is how I manage to get pictures while traveling. In fact, if a week goes by without someone asking this question, I’m surprised. I can’t pinpoint exactly when I did my first solo trip, but the one in my most recent memory is Paris in 2016. That trip was the first I took alone since having started my blog.
I’m not going to lie – I was really nervous! But, I was confident that I’d figure something out, which of course I did. Now, after having taken numerous solo trips, I wanted to share the best ways to get pictures.
Sweet Escape
I was first introduced to Sweet Escape when I went to Hawaii last year. I had such an incredible experience that I knew I could always rely on them if I was traveling alone. Sweet Escape is a photography service that you can hire while traveling. They will set you up with a photographer in the city, who, from my experience, is phenomenal. That’s why when I scheduled my trip to Barcelona, I knew I had to use Sweet Escape to bring my vision to life. They set me up with Sara, who truly felt like more of a friend than a photographer.
The great thing about Sweet Escape is that they are versatile. Whether you’re looking to shoot outfits or wedding pictures, they have a roster of photographers who know how to capture exactly what you’re looking for.
Work with a friend
The great thing about being an Instagrammer is that I have friends all over the world. Barcelona was amazing because I had two friends in the city, and one who traveled a day later to see me. Of course all of this was not a part of my plan when I initially booked my trip! So if you’re an Instagrammer, see if you know anyone else in the city!
Tripod it up
I will admit that I have little experience in this area, but I highly recommend you check out this blog post by Helen from Style Structure. It’s one of the most informative pieces about self-photography, and as you can see from her Instagram, she is very talented and knows what she’s talking about.
Ask a stranger
Most people are so nice when it comes to getting a picture of you. The best way to go about doing this is frame the picture exactly as you want it before asking someone to take a picture of you. If you have a DSLR, I find it’s best to ask someone else who owns a DSLR as they’re always a little less intimidated by the equipment!

Sweet Escape is such a good idea. I know so many photographers who should be signed up to shoot with them! Last week I had a trip on my own and ended up shooting all my photos on my own with the tripod which I haven’t done in ages but I actually loved it. The results were good, I was so happy because I didn’t have to try and explain my vision I could just frame and shoot what I wanted. My partner usually shoots for me and gets so annoyed when I keep insisting on shooting more, because we haven’t got the shot I wanted for one reason or another. Doing it myself saved so much frustration!
